Mixed Martial Arts

New York Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy offers a Mixed Martial Arts training class where students learn to apply their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques when their opponent is not wearing a kimono (uniform).

Although many people think of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a grappling art, at NYBJJ we understand that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu encompases a variety of strikes, kicks and takedowns.

Students learn how to close the distance and clinch or grab their opponent. Students are also taught a variety of takedowns incorporating moves from Judu, Wrestling and Sambo. In the photo above, a student practices a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu technique knowns as the Bahiana or Double Leg.

Students are taught Ground and Pound techniques including punching from the Mount Position (demonstrated by Professor Marcos Santos in the photo above).

Students learn how to use elbow strikes on an opponent from the top position known as Knee on Belly.

From Side Control students are taught how to strike with punches, elbows and knees while maintaing control of their opponent.

Students practice striking from the Open Guard position.

Students also practice striking from the Closed Guard position. When coupled with the submisison skills learned in BJJ class, these strikes can have a devastating effect on an opponent.
